We All Fall Down Cover

We All Fall Down by Daniel Kalla  Simon and Schuster May 2nd 2019

A critically ill patient lies dying in a remote town in Italy. Alana Vaughn, an infectious diseases expert with NATO, receives a desperate call – she must fly to Italy immediately and confirm what everyone already suspects… that the dying woman has the plague, a
merciless disease that kills in days. When Alana arrives, her worst fears are confirmed.
But the patient isn’t just dying of the plague – she has the strain of the plague known as the Black Death, one of the most devastating pandemics in human history, which eight hundred years ago killed more than a quarter of the world’s population. And if Alana and her counterpart at the World Health Organisation, Byron Menke, can’t track down the source of the disease…then it will be the end of them all.

My Review

Nobody will forget that one history lesson in school when you learnt all about the Plague or Black Death. You couldn’t help but be amazed at the number of people who died, the speed at which it spread and the misconceptions and fear it generated. What if it came back and we were faced with it all again, would the current medical advances cope and contain. If you want to find out then grab yourself a copy of Daniel Kalla’s novel We All Fall Down and be prepared to be terrified and astounded at what you read.

Kalla took us back to Genoa the Italian city where it began in the 14th Century, he gave us modern day medical doctors who fought to contain and discover the source.

Alanna Vaughn a NATO infectious diseases expert thrown into the mix, diligent, determined and highly capable. She could have been quite stern, and harsh, all business but I like that Kalla gave us a real human, one who had to contain her emotions, confront her feelings for a past love as she grabbled with officialdom and the Plague.

Byron, her equivalent but worked for WHO, almost her adversary, stern, brash, overconfident. He was a character you instantly disliked before events and a slow unravelling of his layers revealed a man with emotions and insecurities.

The two were a great team as Kalla skilfully took us on a rollercoaster ride, a furious race against time to prevent the spread of the disease.

Kalla cleverly alternated his chapters between past and present as we read of a simple medical man at the heart of Genoa’s outbreak in 1348. I have to admit to being utterly fascinated and wishing for more but that was not Kalla’s objective. I thought his objective was to show us the similarities between then and now, that thought processes were so often very similar, the basics the same. The only difference for me was the lack of medicines at Rafael’s disposal but I had a massive admiration for his skill and intelligence.

Kalla’s narrative was vivid and perfectly captured the terror and fear both in the past and the present. He didn’t assault us with a myriad of complicated medical terminology, but deftly wove simple explanations into the narrative and heart of the story. It’s pace was unrelenting and you could almost feel you own heart beat speed up as you urged Alana and Byron to discover the truth.

The end when it came was dramatic but satisfying, but it did leave me wanting more of Alana and Byron and I am hoping Kalla will take us on another adventure in their wonderful company.

I would like to thank Simon Schuster for a copy of We All Fall Down to read and review and to Anne Cater Of Random Things Tours for inviting My Bookish Blogspot to participate in the blogtour.
